Job Description:

    

The Theater Offensive (TTO) seeks a Managing Director (MD) who will hold a key leadership role in an innovative, growing, racially diverse, queer cultural organization, tightly focused in Boston’s neighborhoods.  The successful MD candidate with have strong fund development skills and experience, solid business acumen, and keen communication abilities and judgement.

  

THE ORGANIZATION AND OPPORTUNITY

Founded in 1989 by Founding Artistic Director [EAD] Abe Rybeck and a group of artist-activists, TTO grew out of a queer street theater troupe in Boston.  Throughout its history, TTO has furthered its mission “to present the diversity of LGBTQ lives in art so bold it breaks through personal isolation, challenges the status quo, and builds thriving communities.”  In addition to the work it does in local communities, TTO also plays a strong part in national cultural organizing and dialogue.

   

TTO operates three main programs: 

  • •    True Colors: OUT Youth Theater, the longest running queer youth theater program anywhere, for youth ages 14-29;  
  • •    OUT’hood Series, which presents theatrical activities in local neighborhoods every month; and 
  • •    OUT’hood Residencies, which support local, national and international artists in developing works relevant to local neighborhoods. 

TTO is also contracted to house and staff the Pride Youth Theater Alliance, a growing network of 24 queer youth theater programs around North America.

  

Reporting to the Executive Artistic Director and serving on the organization’s senior leadership team, the Managing Director will build on the existing work to date and continue to move the organization forward in the areas of fund development, communications and operations.  Key responsibilities for the Managing Director include:

 

Diversified Fund Development – Planning, budgeting, implementation of development activities including major donor cultivation and stewardship; an extensive grant portfolio; fundraising events; corporate sponsorship; grassroots fundraising; annual appeals; and earned income.

 

Communications – Generating a comprehensive annual external communications plan that engages the local community and elevates TTO’s national and local presence;  as well as overseeing the plan’s implementation.

 

Operations – Overseeing all organizational operations and systems, including facilities management; HR management; operations meetings; and IT. The MD will work closely with the Finance Manager to draft the operational budget.

Candidates must demonstrate their ability to effectively raise funds for, and manage, an organization that has a budget of over $1.3 million and 14 staff members. In addition, candidates should show their leadership capacity for an organization where the majority of staff and constituents are people of color and members of the LGBTQ community.

 

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills, experiences and attributes: 

  • Passion for TTO’s mission and an entrepreneurial spirit that will help fulfill it. 
  • At least five years as a senior staff director, development officer, or equivalent experience with individual and institutional fundraising at TTO’s scale. 
  • Proven record of securing successful five-figure donor gifts and multi-year major grants through thoughtful planning, cultivation and stewardship. 
  • Strong management acumen in supervision, budgeting, financial planning and business planning. 
  • Excellent portfolio of written communications, oral presentations and marketing approaches. 
  • Outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills; the ability to successfully lead and work with a diverse staff, board and body of partners.      
  • Meticulous attention to detail and enduring dependability, as well as the ability to work in a highly flexible, collaborative work environment. 
  • A clear commitment to building systems that support justice and equity.  

 

Coming to this position with relevant relationships among donors, foundations, community members and businesses is a plus.
