Human Resources: HR Generalist

Job Description:

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a dynamic and engaging Human Resources Generalist to join our evolving family of museums – the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, and the William S. Hart Museum. The position supports the Chief Talent Officer in all aspects of Human Resources. Primary responsibilities include the development, implementation and maintenance of employee benefits, high level recruiting and job descriptions, safety, leave of absence, human resources policies and procedures.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Maintains the employee benefits programs including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, employee assistance programs, and flexible spending accounts. Coordinates the open enrollment process including the wellness fair and open enrollment meetings.
  • Administers leaves of absence including communication with staff members and compliance with Federal and State regulations.
  • Handles employee relations concerns, such as conducting investigations, employee complaints, and maintaining proper documentation. 
  • Conducts employee exit interviews, and ensures all museum property is returned.   Analyzes data relating to separation reasons and reports on findings.
  • Maintains all departmental templates including, onboarding, termination, status changes, benefit enrollment, leaves of absence, workers compensation, performance improvement plans and grievances. Ensures that all forms and paperwork are compliant with state and federal law.
  • Administers the employee recognition program including years of service awards. Works with the Marketing and Communications department to strengthen the employee branding vision.
  • Administers or leads Human Resources related trainings and employee/managerial development.
  • Supports in-house recruiting efforts for high level positions.  Creates job ads, reviews applications, makes employment offers, and conducts onboarding.
  • Provides backup support for Worker’s Compensation claims and safety concerns.  As acting backup would communicate with the WC carrier and the claims adjuster to start and close all claims.  This includes the annual OSHA log reporting and tracking, and providing ergonomic assessments upon request.

Job Requirements:

This position has the following requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in human resources (PHR/SPHR preferred), business, organizational psychology, or related experience.
  • Three to five years proven experience in human resources with successful communication and collaboration with others.
  • Must possess the highest level of ethical standards and professional behavior, including confidentiality of employee and museum information. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communicator with an emphasis on cultural and diversity awareness.
  • Must have good analytical and problem solving abilities and well developed coaching skills. Works well in a fast paced environment.
  • Must be versatile and adaptable, independent, able to be a hands-on facilitator with a proven record of building positive professional relationships and generating outstanding results.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and ADP Workforce Now software.

Salary is commensurate with experience plus excellent benefits offered. This is a full time, regular, exempt position.
